Overview: This 3-day hiking tour offers a unique opportunity to explore Albania’s rugged mountains, breathtaking waterfalls, and crystal-clear rivers. Immerse yourself in the pristine wilderness of Theth National Park, trek to the stunning Blue Eye, and uncover the rich folklore and traditions of the Albanian Alps. Designed for nature lovers and adventure seekers, this tour blends challenging hikes with cultural discovery, providing an unforgettable journey through one of Europe’s most hidden gems.
7:00 AM - Departure from Tirana The adventure begins with a pick-up at your hotel in Tirana or Shkoder. We head toward Northern Albania, passing through stunning landscapes featuring wild fields, rivers, Shkodra Lake, and the dramatic Albanian Alps. The beauty of nature will leave you speechless as we journey to Shkoder.
7:30 AM – Local Transport to Thethi As we leave the main road and venture toward Theth, the landscape becomes increasingly rural, with less traffic and more untouched nature. This area is famous for cultivating medicinal herbs, and depending on the time of year (May–June), you might be treated to the sight of lavender fields in full bloom, filling the air with fragrance reminiscent of Provence.
Scenic Drive: The road winds steeply, ascending to an altitude of 1,700 meters above sea level at Qafa e Thores. From here, you’ll be rewarded with a picture-perfect view of the Albanian Alps, perfect for a stop and a photo opportunity.
Arrival at Thethi Village: After a scenic ride, we’ll arrive in Thethi, where you can take in the unique charm of this traditional village, known for its stone houses, lush surroundings, and historical sites.
12:00 PM – Start of Hike to the Blue Eye After a short break, we embark on a hike toward the Blue Eye, a stunning natural phenomenon formed by the erosion of water from the Albanian Alps’ melting snow. This hike is about 3 hours one way, covering a distance of 18 km (round trip) and an elevation gain of 700 meters. For those looking for a shorter route, local transportation from Theth to Nderlysaj is available (cost: 5-7 Euros per person), reducing the hike to 1 hour each way.
The Blue Eye: The Blue Eye’s crystal-clear, bright blue waters and its surrounding nature are a sight to behold. Imagine stepping into a postcard. Fun fact: the temperature of the water is a chilly 5°C, so if you’re feeling brave, you might want to dip your toes in or even take a quick swim.
Visit to Historical Sites: After the hike, we’ll return to Thethi village. You’ll have the opportunity to explore the Old Church, a charming example of Albanian architecture, and the “Lock-in” Tower, a symbol of Theth's historical role in defending its people. Learn about the centuries-old stories tied to these iconic buildings.
Overnight Stay: The day concludes with an overnight stay in a traditional guest house in Theth, where you’ll experience the local hospitality and enjoy a well-deserved rest.
Photography: The Albanian Alps are incredibly photogenic, so make sure you have your camera ready to capture the stunning landscapes, especially at Qafa e Thores.
Local Delicacies: Don’t miss the opportunity to taste some traditional Albanian food in Theth. Ask your guesthouse hosts about local specialties like “tavë kosi” (lamb with yogurt) and fresh mountain cheeses.
Cultural Insights: Have a conversation with your guide to learn more about the local history, the significance of medicinal herbs, and the stories behind Thethi’s historical landmarks.
After Breakfast: After a delicious breakfast at your guesthouse, prepare for an easy and scenic hike to Grunas Waterfall, just an hour’s walk from Theth Village.
Hike Description: The path takes you through the heart of local life, passing by traditional Kullas (stone houses typical of the Albanian Alps). Along the way, you will see villagers going about their daily routines, and the landscape shifts from rolling meadows to lush greenery as you approach the waterfall.
Arrival at Grunas Waterfall: Upon arrival, you’ll be mesmerized by the stunning Grunas Waterfall, where water cascades down the grey rocks in a series of mini-waterfalls, resembling a giant curtain of white water. It’s an incredible sight, and the power of nature will leave you in awe. Grunas Waterfall was declared a natural monument in 2002, making it a protected and cherished site.
Exploration Time: Take your time to soak in the breathtaking views, snap some photos, and relax by the waterfall while enjoying the tranquil surroundings of the Albanian Alps.
Return to Theth: After spending some time at the waterfall, we’ll make our way back to Theth Village, where you’ll have the rest of the afternoon free to explore the area at your leisure.
Free Afternoon: You can take a relaxing walk around the National Park, visit the village’s historical sites, or simply unwind in the natural beauty of the surroundings.
Overnight in Theth: Enjoy another peaceful night at your guesthouse, reflecting on the day’s adventures.
Historical Context: Consider adding a short introduction to the history of the Kullas along the hike. These traditional stone houses are an important part of the local culture and offer fascinating insight into the lifestyle of the Albanian Alps.
Lunch or Snack Stop: You could include a lunch or snack stop near the waterfall to give participants a chance to relax and enjoy the peaceful environment. Perhaps a local guide can offer some traditional snacks or drinks.
Optional Guided Nature Walk: For those interested in learning more about the local flora and fauna, offer an optional guided nature walk in the afternoon. This would provide further engagement with the natural beauty of the Albanian Alps.
Morning: Last Moments in Thethi
Wake Up in Thethi: Begin the day by waking up to the breathtaking views of the Albanian Alps. The crisp mountain air and the rugged landscape will make you wish you had more time to explore this enchanting region.
Free Time to Explore: Take some free time in the morning to soak in the wild beauty of the Accursed Mountains. Whether it’s a peaceful walk around Theth Village or a quiet moment at your guesthouse, enjoy the tranquil surroundings before heading back to the hustle and bustle of the city.
Departure from Thethi: Later in the day, we begin the drive back to Tirana, retracing our path through the scenic countryside. The route includes passing through the same steep, winding roads that bring you up to Qafa e Thores, offering another opportunity for stunning photo opportunities of the Albanian Alps.
Qafa e Thores: Once again, we reach Qafa e Thores, where you’ll be treated to a magnificent panoramic view of the surrounding peaks and valleys. Take a moment to pause and appreciate the beauty before the road starts to descend.
Zigzagging through the Mountains: As we continue on the winding zig-zagging roads, the terrain gradually smoothens, and we begin to descend toward Shkoder or Tirana. The dramatic changes in the landscape as you leave the mountains behind are a reminder of the diverse beauty of Albania.
Arrival in Tirana: After a scenic journey, we’ll arrive back in Tirana, where your adventure concludes. You’ll be full of unforgettable memories, from the majestic mountains to the charming villages, and ready to share your newfound excitement about Albania with friends and family.
End of the Tour: Whether you’re staying in Tirana or heading elsewhere, this trip will leave you with a renewed sense of adventure and a deeper appreciation for Albania’s natural beauty and rich culture.
Snacks and Refreshments: Consider providing a small snack or drink for the journey back, such as a local pastry or fruit, to enhance the experience.
Last-Minute Photos: Encourage travelers to take a few last photos along the route, especially at Qafa e Thores, where the views are truly spectacular.
Reflection Time: As you drive back, the guide could ask participants to share their favorite moments from the trip, creating a moment of reflection before they return to everyday life.
